This was one of the most challenging films I’ve ever worked on –
The story was of a couple very much in love, but the girl tragically loses her hearing in a car crash.
The boyfriend fears that he can no longer communicate with her, so goes about writing a piece (he is a professional pianist) that she can somehow ‘hear’ through the vibrations in the piano itself.
So the challenge for me was to write something that primarily used the lower end of the piano aggressively to create enough vibrations to be able to feel through your body, but also have a romanticism to it that ties in with his final gesture after the piece is finished. You’ll have to watch the film to find out what that is, as I’ve given most of the plot away already!
This was all done before filming, as I had to write out the final piano score for the actor, who had to also be a competent pianist to realistically match the hand movements on screen.
